Product types
Radiofrequency ablation
Radiofrequency ablation creates a small lesion in tissue by heating it with radiofrequency energy, interrupting the electrical pathway that sustains the arrhythmia. An irrigated catheter continuously flushes fluid at the tip during energy delivery, which keeps the surface cool and allows deeper lesions without charring or clot formation. A non-irrigated catheter creates wider but shallower lesions, with a higher risk of charring at high power. Ablation for typical atrial flutter targets the cavotricuspid isthmus, the anatomical line along which the arrhythmia's circuit travels.
Irrigation pumps
An irrigation pump delivers fluid to the tip of the ablation catheter at a controlled flow throughout the procedure, maintaining the cooling that irrigated ablation depends on and reducing the risk of clot forming at the catheter tip.
Diagnostic and mapping catheters
Diagnostic catheters record electrical signals from inside the heart to locate the source of an arrhythmia before ablation. A steerable catheter has a deflectable tip that can be positioned at different points within the chamber during the same procedure, while a fixed-curve catheter holds a predetermined shape and is used for recording at standard anatomical positions.
Electrophysiology study
An electrophysiology study places multipolar catheters inside the heart to record electrograms and uses a stimulator to deliver programmed stimulation, attempting to induce or terminate the suspected arrhythmia and localise its mechanism before any ablation is carried out.
Temporary pacing
Temporary pacing catheters deliver a transvenous impulse when the heart needs immediate, not permanent, support: in haemodynamically unstable bradycardia or atrioventricular block, as a precaution after an anterior heart attack that carries a high risk of block, or as procedural backup during interventions that could affect impulse conduction.
