Radiation protection
Garments and shielding for staff in the catheterisation laboratory and in interventional radiology.
Where it is used
- Reduction of occupational radiation dose for catheterisation laboratory staff
- Staff protection during electrophysiology procedures
- Staff protection in interventional radiology
Product types
Personal protective equipment
Aprons and vests attenuate the scatter radiation coming off the patient during fluoroscopy, reducing the dose to the body of staff standing at the table. Thyroid collars protect the thyroid gland, which is particularly radiosensitive. Protective eyewear reduces the dose to the eye's lens; interventional staff have shown a markedly higher incidence of cataracts than unexposed colleagues, and eyewear with side shielding reduces eye dose more than a simple frontal lens.
Fixed and mobile room shielding
Ceiling-suspended shielding systems protect the operator at the table without adding the weight of a worn garment. Table-mounted and mobile shields cover the table and lower-body level, where personal garments give the least coverage.
Dosimetry and maintenance
Personal dosimetry accessories, particularly active electronic dosimeters, give an immediate reading of dose rate, letting staff change position or distance right away rather than only seeing exposure after the fact from a passive badge. Racks and hangers store protective garments hanging, not folded: folding creates creases in the protective core that leave gaps in shielding without being visible.
